Construction Estimator

Currie & Brown is currently looking for a construction estimator to support work in the San Francisco area who meets the following requirements:

  • A minimum of five years' experience in CSA and/or MEP disciplines, including a substantial track record of working on engineering and construction projects in the manufacturing and commercial sectors
  • Bachelor's degree in construction
  • Membership of a relevant professional organization, eg RICS, CMAA, ASPE, AACEI
  • Experience in conceptual design phase estimating and change order estimating
  • Good time management, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office tools; adept in the use of estimating and takeoff software
  • Strong presentation skills, able to chair and run scope and estimate review meetings if required
  • Ability to self-manage and use initiative, requiring minimum supervision
  • Understanding and application of value engineering
  • Understanding of local and national construction market including pricing conventions and trends
  • Ability to prepare conceptual cost model estimates from limited information using local historic cost information
  • Ability to manage teams, understand deliverables and deadlines and be able to deliver to these requirements
  • Understanding of imperial and metric units of measurement
  • Ability to read and understand design documents
  • Conversant with various contracting models
  • Familiarity with scope development best practice and fit-for-purpose parametric, conceptual material takeoff (MTO), and detailed MTO estimating techniques
  • Experience in implementing estimating policy, procedures, processes, guidelines, tools and templates

The successful candidate will be directly responsible for multiple small, medium and large projects in the commercial and manufacturing sectors.

Responsibilities for the successful candidate will include:

  • Preparing cost estimates inclusive of all direct cost of construction along with indirect owner cost
  • Preparing CSI and Uniformat WBS
  • Preparing conceptual, schematic, detailed and construction design phase estimating
  • Preparing estimates inclusive of quantity measurement and calculation and application of unit prices rates
  • Preparing estimates inclusive of civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and related building trades
  • Undertaking responsibility for the estimating and cost management function for assigned projects, including benchmarking
  • Participating in the review of estimates for completeness and accuracy
  • Undertaking local cost benchmarking by helping to maintain historical cost database and applying learning for improved project performance
  • Estimating reconciliation with clients and contractors
  • Developing estimates inclusive of escalation and contingency
  • Undertaking independent review of change orders
  • Supporting the training/mentoring of junior staff
  • Providing cost and direction to the client's project management team on assigned projects
  • Attending meetings with clients, architects/engineers and contractors
  • Providing assurance to total project cost estimates along with auditing contractor and engineering estimates to ensure appropriate cost target setting
