Fae Nightingale Assistant Cost Consultant, UK
After initial interest in becoming an architectural engineer, I decided I was more suited to a career in quantity surveying due to my aptitude for working with numbers, organisation and project management. I decided to apply for a job as an apprentice with the company in 2015 because it gave me the opportunity to ‘learn and earn’.
My role is diverse and offers me the opportunity to constantly learn. When I first started out I would complete a lot of CAD measuring and occasionally attend meetings. However, as my role has evolved I now attend a wide range of meetings. These can be progress meetings, valuation meetings, site team meetings or design team meetings and may be with the contractor, other project partners or clients.
Following each meeting I write up the necessary minutes, financial reports or updated risk registers. I complete cost plans, site inspections, financial reports, tender documents and analysis. I also work on the preparation and signing of contract documents and general agreeing of variations.
If I’m being honest, I love everything about my job. Because I have to attend meetings on site and with the contractor, I don’t spend all my time in the office and every day is different. I also particularly enjoy the level of detail that this job requires. My favourite part of the job is getting a project to the contract stage where it can then begin on site.
Currie & Brown offers good career progression and there are lots of opportunities, both in the UK and internationally. I am looking forward to starting the Currie & Brown APC programme and becoming chartered. Within the individual offices there are many amazing people who have supported my learning and helped me to become better at my job. I feel the level of support and the range of project experience I am gaining each month is incredible. I have been given a large amount of responsibility over the past three years and have run six very different projects almost solely, these include civil, listed heritage buildings and new office blocks. I appreciate the trust and flexibility which the company offers me in this role.
