Jill Kennedy Director, Hong Kong
I became a Director of Currie & Brown in 2011. Currently I am responsible for leading a cost management team in Hong Kong which is working on a variety of projects ranging from office fit out projects to a major civil engineering project at the Airport. During my time with the company I have transitioned from a hands-on Quantity Surveyor, to a leadership role managing teams, securing new projects and with greater involvement in running the business.
I joined Currie & Brown (previously known as Widnell) in January 1997 as a project Quantity Surveyor for the construction of the new HAECO (Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company) aircraft hangar for the new HK International airport at Chek Lap Kok. It was an exciting time to join the company and be part of the 10 Airport Core Projects which enabled the relocation of the old airport from Kai Tak to Chek Lap Kok.
I initially trained as a Quantity Surveyor in London, I was attracted to the profession as it enabled me to work with a variety of people and use my analytic skills. Working in consultancy, for a public authority and for a contractor provided me with a diverse range of experience.
I then relocated to Ghana in West Africa, where I worked on a variety of healthcare and education projects. I feel that my exposure to working in different countries, cultures and organisations has enabled me to gain a better understanding of clients and the ability to view different points objectively.
I like working with clients to get the best value for money and see Currie & Brown add real value to a project. I enjoy liaising with our global business on projects and engaging with senior leaders on a steering committee to shape the future of the business. This provides me with a better understanding of our global business challenges and those facing our clients across the globe.
Currie & Brown is different to other companies, the staff in Hong Kong are dedicated and hardworking, many of them are long standing professionals. The company embraces technology and provides an opportunity to drive change across our industry. There is an ethos which encourages training and professional qualifications whilst also respecting work life balance, this has enabled me to have a family and a career.
