Tim West Associate, United Arab Emirates

Tim West

I started my career working for a roofing and cladding sub-contractor in the dual role of estimator/quantity surveyor. A few years later I moved to a local authority to continue my career progression and work on the consultancy side of the QS discipline. During this time, I also attended university on a part-time basis to obtain my degree in quantity surveying.

I was initially attracted to the profession because of the daily variety the role offered, coupled with the diversity of the projects. No two days are the same! I also enjoyed getting out of the office periodically to visit sites and attend meetings and workshops.

After completing my studies, I joined Sweett Group in the Cambridge Office. The office had recently been awarded a number of exciting and high-profile pharmaceutical projects on one of the science parks in Cambridge. I was able to become fully immersed in the delivery of these projects, responsible for managing the commercial and contractual aspects. I worked closely with the client and felt that my contribution was meaningful and appreciated. It really helped me develop as a professional and gave me confidence for the next stage of my career journey.

Sweett Group was subsequently acquired by Currie & Brown, and shortly after this I was offered a secondment opportunity in Saudi Arabia to support a recent commission there. Despite the initial culture shock, my experience and training enabled me to quickly adapt to the new environment and different ways of working. I quickly realised that I wanted to continue my overseas adventure and decided to move to the United Arab Emirates on a permanent basis.

The Middle East has given me exposure to incredible large-scale developments and ambitious projects conceived by world renowned architects. Involvement in such projects is both challenging and rewarding. My recent work has been supporting Dar Group in their head office in Beirut, Lebanon. I provide support for cost management, claims work and project management across a portfolio of high-profile projects in the GCC region.

Currie & Brown has a fantastic and unrivalled commitment to its staff, offering excellent training and development opportunities to make its staff the best in class. In addition, Currie & Brown encourages its staff to leverage its global presence and develop their career in other offices around the world.
