Cornwall House wins Green Gown Award 2014

Currie & Brown provided project management, cost management and CDM-C services on the University of Exeter’s Cornwall House project which won a Green Gown award in the ‘Construction and Refurbishment’ category.

Now in their tenth year, the Green Gown awards recognise the exceptional sustainability initiatives being undertaken by universities and colleges across the UK. The awards have become established as the most prestigious recognition of best practice within the further and higher education sector.

Using ‘revolving green’ funding from the Higher Education Funding Council for England, the University of Exeter set out to show that there is life in 1960’s building stock, of which there is much in the higher education sector. The process delivered considerable energy/carbon savings, improved student, staff and public satisfaction and a vibrant building, fit to be part of a low-carbon campus of the future.

Commenting on the success of the project, Currie & Brown’s Ky Cheal, associate director, said: "Cornwall House is proof that it is possible to upgrade poor-performing 1960’s concrete buildings into vibrant, energy-efficient, attractive buildings at a fraction of the cost of new build. Valuable lessons were learnt that could benefit all who are looking to refurbish these types of buildings."
