Major campus landscaping project in Birmingham starts on site

September marked the start of an ambitious scheme to transform the campus of the University of Birmingham with the groundbreaking of the Green Heart landscaping project.

The striking 12-acre parkland will provide a unique space for entertainment, socialising and studying, including a grass auditorium, event space and a new café as well as dedicated areas for art and sculptures. Currie & Brown has been engaged to provide cost management services on the scheme, which will open up the campus for students, staff and the local community to enjoy.

The Green Heart will focus on biodiversity and sustainability, incorporating a range of wild flowers and native plants as well as nesting sites which will attract wildlife including bats, swifts and hedgehogs. The project will additionally see 160 new trees being planted and 144 existing trees being protected. Zoned lighting incorporating energy-saving techniques will be used on campus, as well as energy-generating paving and rain gardens.

University vice-chancellor Sir David Eastwood, who led the recent ground-breaking ceremony, commented: "This is one of the most ambitious redevelopments of the University of Birmingham’s campus in a generation. I look forward to watching the Green Heart come to life."
