STEM centre reaches completion at City College Plymouth

City College Plymouth’s new Regional Centre of Excellence for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), for which Currie & Brown provided a number of consultancy services, reached practical completion in mid-July and is set to open in time for the new academic year in September.

Currie & Brown provided cost and project management as well as principal designer and clerk of works services on the King’s Road development, which comprises five laboratories; ICT space for engineering, digital and creative media; sports science, learning resource space; social areas; and staff accommodation. The scheme also included the refurbishment of the existing reception area and the adjacent hall for a technical theatre and ancillary spaces.

The 5,700m2 STEM centre will enable students to access quality teaching and will help to ensure that Plymouth is recognised as a world leader in STEM development. Designed and supported by employers, the STEM centre will provide ‘real work’ environments to develop key skills, knowledge and behaviours.

Sam Abbott, vice-principal for resources at City College Plymouth, noted: "Currie & Brown set high expectations for the team and we were impressed by how they maintained the absolute importance of the ‘student experience’. No savings were taken that reduced this experience and hence the project was delivered on time and within budget."
