NHS Orkney appoints Currie & Brown for operational role at The Balfour

Currie & Brown has been appointed by NHS Orkney as authority technical advisor (ATA) for the operational phase of NHS Orkney’s new rural general hospital and healthcare facility, The Balfour. The project is being delivered using a variation of the Scottish government’s NPD model, which was developed as an alternative to the traditional private finance initiative in Scotland.

The hospital, located in Kirkwall, has been designed to put the local community first and to make a positive contribution to the environment and economy. The materials and built form of the hospital will reflect Orkney’s heritage and ecology.

The gross internal floor area of the project is 16,000m2 and Currie & Brown’s role as ATA will involve visiting the site twice a year and undertaking a review of the monthly operational reports and lifecycle expenditure.

Commenting on the appointment Russell Frame, senior director at Currie & Brown, said: “Currie & Brown is delighted to be appointed to provide ATA operational monitoring services on this new landmark hospital project in Orkney following its successful handover to the NHS. We look forward to a continuation of our ongoing working relationship with NHS Orkney that was developed pre-financial close and then throughout the construction period, which is now drawing to a close.”
