North Devon Council appoints Currie & Brown on new state-of-the art leisure centre

Construction is due to start in July on the building of a replacement leisure centre for North Devon.

Currie & Brown has been appointed by North Devon Council to act as independent certifier and authority’s representative for the new Tarka Leisure Centre in Barnstaple.

The leisure centre, designed by Watson Batty Architects and funded by the local authority, Sport England and the Coastal Communities Fund, will incorporate two new swimming pools with moveable floors and spectator seating, sports hall, gym, exercise studios and Devon’s first endless ski slope for indoor ski practice. A new reception area and café will provide views of the pools, ski slope and sports hall.

As independent certifier, Currie & Brown is employed to make an independent assessment on the amount invoiced each month, and as the authority’s representative, the company will administer the contract and report back to the authority on progress, cost and programme changes.

Councillor David Worden, leader of North Devon Council, commented: “Replacing the existing leisure centre has been our ambition for the past ten years, so awarding this contract is a huge milestone for the project. The new leisure centre will have one of only a handful of endless ski slopes in the UK.”

Myles Clough, director in our Exeter office, remarked: “North Devon Council is a valued client of ours and we have enjoyed working with them for almost five years. We look forward to continuing our relationship with them over the next few years on this exciting project, which will be a fantastic asset for Barnstaple and the whole of North Devon. The county will have some of the finest sports facilities in the South West.”
