Planning submitted for Midhope Castle Distillery

Currie & Brown has been engaged to provide cost management, project management, employer’s agent and principal designer services on the development of a new malt whisky distillery on the Hopetoun Estate, near South Queensferry.
Designed by 56three architects, plans, which draw on the historic landscape of the surroundings, have been submitted for a contemporary single malt distillery on the Hopetoun Estate, adjacent to Midhope Castle. Long-term plans also include the restoration of the 16th-century Midhope Castle, a derelict tower house which is currently unused.
Sustainability will be at the heart of the project, with a heavy focus on reducing the buildings carbon footprint to almost zero. Barley will be sourced exclusively from the Hopetoun Estate, which has traditionally grown and supplied malting barley to the Scottish whisky trade, and underground springs on the estate will provide the fresh water.
Robbie Smith, director in our Edinburgh office, commented: “Having worked with the client over the past year, we are delighted that Midhope Castle Distillery has reached this important milestone. This is a hugely exciting project, developing a new distillery to produce high-quality whisky and a genuinely sustainable low-carbon product. The project also involves the conservation of the 16th-century Midhope Castle — Lallybroch to fans of the TV series Outlander.”
