Whipps Cross Hospital site to undergo major redevelopment

Currie & Brown is providing programme management, cost consultancy and business case services on the Whipps Cross Hospital redevelopment programme to incorporate a brand-new, state-of-the-art hospital and a residential-led, mixed-use development into the existing site.

Whipps Cross is one of six hospitals to benefit from £2.7 billion of funding over the next five years, as part of the government’s Health Infrastructure Programme announced in 2019. Working alongside Barts Health NHS Trust, Currie & Brown led the development of the strategic outline case (SOC) which was approved by the trust in March 2020, and NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSE&I) and the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) have now also given the go-ahead to proceed to the outline business case stage. The SOC summary has now been published, setting out the proposals for the site. Once complete, Whipps Cross will be one of the biggest new-build hospitals in the UK.

Since October 2018 and during the SOC development stage, Currie & Brown has been providing programme management, cost consultancy and business case services. We have now been appointed to the next stage to provide project and cost management services on the enabling works. These will be completed over the next two years, preparing the site for the main hospital construction works, scheduled to commence in autumn 2022. The works include the demolition of the disused buildings on the site of the former nurses’ accommodation, construction of a new multistorey car park, and infrastructure works to facilitate the new construction.

Completion of the new hospital building is scheduled for autumn 2026.
