Work completes on Garden of Reflection at Trafford General Hospital
27 November 2020
Appointed via the NHS SBS multidisciplinary framework, Currie & Brown has been providing ongoing project management and quantity surveying services to Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.
Completed last month, this two-year project has seen Currie & Brown provide project management and quantity surveying services to transform an area of internal public space at Trafford General Hospital into an accessible garden of reflection for patients, staff and visitors.
The redundant space was overgrown and wild, necessitating the complete removal of all undergrowth and debris, the removal of basement entrance hatches and the relocation of pipework to facilitate the installation of the new garden.
Designed by Day Architectural, the design takes into account the differing needs of patients and visitors to the hospital and is dementia and autism friendly. The seating areas have been specifically designed to work in harmony with raised planters, which contain a limited colour palette of healing and medicinal plants. Central to the garden is a pagoda, with intricate metalwork detailing the sides. A sustainable lighting scheme, which uses mini-LEDs to light up the trees, ensures full visual accessibility from the internal corridors at night.
Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust has been named as Natural Environment Champion 2020 by Investors in the Environment, for the variety of green space and biodiversity projects taking place across the trust, of which the Trafford General Hospital’s Garden of Reflection is one.
Antonia Stowe, senior project manager in Currie & Brown’s Leeds office, commented: “What I have loved most about this project is that it encompasses and showcases the uniqueness in what we do at Currie & Brown. As specialists in public realm, we co-ordinated design and stakeholder engagement on the commission of this site-specific, functional and aesthetic fabrication for the hospital. It feels so relaxing in there! The delivery team has succeeded in making this very special indeed.”
