Contract in place for new footbridge on River Thames

Currie & Brown is providing cost and project management services on the construction of a new pedestrian footbridge at Dukes Meadows in Chiswick on behalf of the London Borough of Hounslow.

The new pedestrian footbridge is part of the wider regeneration project for Dukes Meadows, which comprises 187 acres of parkland adjacent to the River Thames. The footbridge will provide a new access route under the Grade II-listed Barnes Bridge, connecting two sections of the Thames Path, unlocking further walking and cycling paths between Hammersmith and Brentford. The project also achieves some of the Mayor of London’s objectives that form part of the transport strategy and embrace the ‘healthy streets’ approach.

To maximise views across the river, Moxon Architects has designed the bridge with a ‘half-through’ truss design with angled bracing, which will cater for wheelchair, mobility scooter and pushchair users.

Due for completion in 2022, the bridge will be constructed using off-site prefabrication methods and will be transported down the river, rather than by road, to reduce carbon consumption for the duration of the project and to minimise disruption to the surrounding area, particularly with the closure of Hammersmith Bridge.
