Currie & Brown appointed to Guernsey hospital transformation

Currie & Brown has been engaged by the States of Guernsey to provide a number of services on the modernisation of the Princess Elizabeth Hospital (PEH) in Guernsey.

The comprehensive series of upgrades is proposed to be completed over three phases to enable the island’s only hospital to remain fully operational throughout. Currie & Brown is project managing phase one of the programme, as well as providing quantity surveying, lifecycle advisory and risk advisory services. The team is also providing healthcare planning services to all three phases of the project.

Funding for phase 1 of the programme has been secured and construction is due to start in March 2022. Pending government approval of phases 2 and 3, more than £100 million will be invested in the hospital modernisation programme over the next seven years. It will deliver flexible and future-proofed layouts and facilities to ensure the highest quality services are available to patients and staff. Energy saving design is at the heart of the development.

Due for completion by 2023, phase one of the project comprises the redevelopment of the critical care unit into a larger, more flexible unit; the refurbishment of the adjacent post-anaesthesia care unit to provide ten beds, with the capability to convert into additional critical care beds if needed; new change facilities for theatres; and all associated infrastructure works.

Phase two, the biggest phase of the development, will see the construction of a three-storey extension, designed by IBI Group. The building will incorporate a new main entrance and link to the original building, and it will be home for a new paediatrics ward and outpatient facilities, maternity ward and neonatal intensive care unit and a new breast screening unit. New operating theatres will also be located on level two, with adjacent admission discharge unit and sterile supplies department. The top floor will comprise a private ward and private outpatient facilities, with a dedicated outside entrance.

The emergency department will be refurbished as part of phase three, to create separate entrances for walk-ins and ambulances. Orthopaedics will be relocated next to the general surgical ward and the fracture clinic will move closer to the emergency department to improve patient flow across the site. All upgrades are due for completion in 2028.

Commenting on the project, Paul Mason, Currie & Brown director, said: “Our team comprises a combination of highly skilled staff to deliver this important project for the people of Guernsey. The phased approach to the project will allow the PEH to continue to deliver vital healthcare services while the modernisation works take place. This much-needed upgrade to the Bailiwick site will provide flexibility to allow the PEH to adapt as necessary in the future.”
