Currie & Brown to project manage Plymouth Civic Square regeneration

Plans are moving ahead for a major upgrade of Plymouth city centre’s Grade II-listed Civic Square. The city has received government funding and a pre-application for the design of the Civic Square has been lodged with Plymouth City Council.

The public square was built between 1957 and 1962 to create a link between the Guildhall and the Civic Centre while respecting the lines of the Armada Way.

The regeneration proposal, which is part of the council’s Resurgam economic programme, aims to attract more people to live in, work in and visit the centre of Plymouth. The council aims to create a public realm design for the Civic Square that fully responds to the opportunity to celebrate and restore the most important heritage features of the square.

The plans include an upgraded coffee pavilion, soft landscaping works and tree-planting, and a new sustainable urban drainage system for the square in Armada Way. The council-owned Plymouth Guildhall and former Civic Centre, now dubbed The Civic, will also be regenerated to create an international conference centre, offices, apartments and a music venue.

Currie & Brown is leading the two major projects targeted for the multimillion-pound funding: the regeneration of Old Town Street and New George Street, where enabling works have already started to take place, and the revitalisation of the Civic Square.

In September 2020, Phil Jailler, associate project manager in Currie & Brown’s Plymouth office, and Tom Lowry, design and delivery co-ordinator for strategic planning and infrastructure at the council, led the procurement of the landscape architecture practice that will collaborate with Plymouth City Council on the public realm proposals. Phil explained: “The scheme will involve the restoration of historic features and green space while reinstating the square as the civic and cultural heart of the city, linking formal events with retail and commercial activities, providing space for relaxation and play across this central location.”
