Key Plymouth interchange set for upgrade

Currie & Brown will provide contract management services to Plymouth City Council on the upgrade of the Manadon Interchange, a busy roundabout on the A38 Devon Expressway in Plymouth.

The junction between the A38 Devon Expressway and the A386 is one of the busiest junctions on the Plymouth road network, with over 60,000 journeys passing through each day. The roundabout is part of a key route to schools and Derriford Hospital, and at peak hours there are often long queues of traffic on each of the four arms.

Investigations have begun into how best to improve the corridor between northern and central Plymouth, and public opinion, which is currently being sought, will inform the design. Objectives for the scheme include improving road safety; reducing congestion; improving air quality in the area; upgrading the cycling and walking links; and encouraging sustainable methods of transportation. The consultation period closes in January, with work scheduled to begin in 2025 and completion expected in 2029.

Phil Jailler, associate in Currie & Brown’s Plymouth office, remarked: “We are pleased to be extending our work with Plymouth City Council, providing support to the outline business case for the redevelopment of the Manadon Interchange. As one of the most congested junctions on the Plymouth road network, the development of the junction should come as a welcome relief to commuters.”
