Transport for London engages Currie & Brown for building surveying services

Currie & Brown recently provided building surveying services on construction works on Transport for London (TfL)’s Kingsland Road arches in Dalston.

The project comprises the renovation and refurbishment of five arches under the TfL Overground line, and at 5 Kingsland Road, an adjoining brick and concrete office building which previously formed part of the entrance to Shoreditch railway station. The site falls within the Kingsland Road conservation area and adjacent to the South Shoreditch conservation area.

Works to date include the demolition of infill structures between the railway arches and the public street, with internal, external and structural refurbishment to the office building in preparation for tenant fit-out.

The five arches will now undergo shell and core fit-out, including structural and floor alterations. The common area between the arches will be enclosed by a new glazed roof/wall system with street access. Removal of the derelict shopfronts has also revealed the brick arches in their original splendour.

The proposed new shopfronts have been sympathetically designed by Fletcher Priest Architects to reflect and enhance the Kingsland Road conservation area. Energy efficiency is a key driver of the project, and the development will make use of passive and active design qualities while maintaining the buildings’ historic character.

Commenting on the works, Kevin Freeman, director in Currie & Brown’s London office, said: “We are really pleased to support TfL with its upgrade and regeneration of Kingsland Road. The new shop fronts and other design elements will enhance the local area and are in keeping with the two London conservation areas that are in close proximity.”

Jo Fisher, senior property manager at TfL, added: “This exciting scheme will restore these arches and make the space available for new tenants and services in the Dalston area. This work is part of our wider investments into our arches and commercial estate, which are home to small businesses all over London and provide new opportunities for our tenants and London’s communities.”
