£4.8 million restoration of 19th century Delapré Abbey stable block

The 900-year-old Grade II-listed Delapré Abbey in Northampton is set to undergo modernisation of its stable yard as part of a scheme to attract social enterprise and improve wellbeing for the local community and visitors.

Currie & Brown is proud to be working in partnership with Delapré Abbey Preservation Trust on the meticulous restoration of the stable block that sits within the heart of a growing heritage and conservation portfolio in the area.

Our Milton Keynes team will oversee the project management, contract administration and quantity surveying for the prestigious establishment, which will comprise the restoration and repurposing of the existing buildings in consultation with local stakeholders. The project is due to be completed in 2025 subject to a successful National Lottery Heritage Fund bid.

The site offers the local community as well as visitors an opportunity to explore and learn about the historical significance of Delapré Abbey originating as a Clunniac nunnery, later becoming a family residence. The abbey was eventually handed over to the Abbey Preservation Trust, which opened its doors to the public in 2018.

Richard Clinton, CEO of Delapré Abbey Preservation Trust, said: “Currie & Brown demonstrated a great local knowledge of Northampton and the stakeholders involved in this exciting project. Their insight and experience in delivering heritage projects was impressive alongside their approach to delivering quality and cost control, which was a priority for us particularly in these uncertain times.”

Andrew Faraday, director for Currie & Brown, said: “Delapré Abbey is an environment that people can explore, relax in and enjoy. It is an important asset to the region and we are honoured to be part of the restoration of it."

Nick Gray, COO, Currie & Brown said: “It’s great to see such significant historic projects being preserved and developed across the UK, providing local communities and visitors with inspiring and accessible environments to support health and wellbeing. Congratulations to the Milton Keynes team on securing such an important project.”
