Plymouth Community Homes selects Currie & Brown on Abbey Court project
25 April 2022
Currie & Brown has won the contract to lead a multidisciplinary team of consultants providing design, cost and core management services to facilitate the refurbishment of Abbey Court in Plymouth’s prestigious Barbican area.
Plymouth Community Homes (PCH) has appointed Currie & Brown to undertake and co-ordinate condition surveys and feasibility studies and provide full design and contract administration from project conception to completion.
Constructed in 1938, the Abbey Court development is a purpose-built four-storey block of social housing, comprising 13 bedsits, 12 flats and 14 maisonettes. PCH’s refurbishment project aims to modernise the full block with the possibility of implementing other added-value elements where appropriate. The scope of work will likely include improvements to roof coverings; thermal performance upgrade of building fabric to current standards; modernisation of internal and external communal spaces; improvements to communal lighting; improvements to external areas and outbuilding; and structural repairs.
Currie & Brown will support PCH’s target to meet or exceed SAP C+ rating by 2030 by assessing and implementing the necessary energy performance improvements. We will also advise on additional actions that could be implemented to help PCH achieve the 2050 zero carbon target.
Commenting on the appointment, Jack Donovan, project lead and building surveyor in the Plymouth office, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate Currie & Brown’s experienced multidisciplinary skill set in supporting our client to achieve an improved living environment for residents and a better-performing building for the future. The project has come at a critical time in mitigating climate change, and we are looking forward to supporting the implementation of thermal and other environmental improvements to strengthen both the environmental performance and aesthetic of the property."
