Following the sale of their renowned site, Television Centre, in London’s W12, the BBC, as part of a 15-year lease agreement with the new site owner and developer, Stanhope, undertook to refurbish Studios 1, 2 and 3 and their ancillary spaces.
Works included the soft strip, extensive asbestos remediation, demolition and structural works to reconfigure the internal spaces and the fit-out and MEP upgrade of new dressing rooms, green rooms, make-up and wardrobe spaces, offices and production galleries over five storeys.
Intended to be operated by BBC Studioworks, responsible for prime time shows such as Strictly Come Dancing, Children in Need and Keep It In The Family, this was a prestigious development with works being undertaken to a listed building and on a wider masterplan development site so special considerations had to be given for live broadcasting, talent accessibility and audience handling.
Currie & Brown was appointed as cost consultants and contract administrators in August 2013 to see the project from the former RIBA Stage C through to Studioworks’ occupation in 2017.
Currie & Brown provided the following services:
We operated an open-book system and had a collaborative and collocated working environment with the client in order to effectively deliver this high-quality project and ensure value for money.
With budget pressures, we implemented a series of value engineering workshops, which resulted in approximately £1 million of savings against tendered packages (around 5% of the project value). We also delivered risk management/early warning workshops to aid the co-ordination of the design and to manage landlord interface issues. These allowed effective mitigation strategies to be considered and implemented while also ensuring proactive cost reporting throughout the project.
