New York University Abu Dhabi
New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) occupies a state-of-the-art campus on Saadiyat Island, just off the coast of Abu Dhabi.
The previously undeveloped island, which is now connected to the mainland via a high-capacity causeway, was developed to incorporate various uses including residential areas, cultural attractions, the NYUAD campus and other uses (including the Zayed National Museum, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi). The NYUAD campus will accommodate a student body of approximately 4,000, with on-campus university housing available for students, faculty and staff.
Currie & Brown provided a range of commercial management and risk management services for the project. We were also engaged to provide procurement and cost advice on an ongoing basis for client-procured items (furniture and equipment) to be used within the university. Given the size and scale of the project and the variety of equipment and suppliers, this was a significant task that ensured a control process and added value to the client purchasing process.
Other tasks in relation to the overall procurement of the university included:
- Commercial support in relation to the various agreements and contracts. This required close collaboration and joint working with both the Tamkeen internal team and their legal advisors. Working as a combined team allowed the various commercial points and cross-over technical/legal areas to be assessed in a co-ordinated manner during contract negotiations.
- Facilities management of the existing ‘Downtown campus’ and the new facilities. For the Downtown facilities we supported the establishment of the in-house FM capability and the transition of the existing facilities under their jurisdiction. For the new facilities we managed the procurement of the FM provider, preparing the tender package, running the tender competition, and reviewing and recommending the preferred tenderer.
“The Currie & Brown team has provided a range of services and support to Tamkeen through the procurement, build, handover and transition to operational stages of the campus. This has involved a range of dedicated and specialised inputs, including cost and procurement, key FM support and establishment of the FM contract, plus ongoing support and input. I have always found the Currie & Brown team to be well motivated, and able to integrate well with the client team as well as contractors and suppliers. As an organisation, Currie & Brown was able to provide a range of grades of staff appropriate to my needs, as well as both international and local teams to address the commercial requirements at varied stages of the delivery of this unique educational facility.”
