Residential refurbishment

The project comprised the creation of the first certified Passivhaus residential refurbishment on the Island of Jersey. The design intent was to create a 21^st century home with a combination of traditional and modern materials, green technologies and modern methods of construction.

This involved constructing a super-insulated building envelope with minimal heat loss, air leakage and energy consumption. Hot water is generated by a combination of a 5.4m² solar tube array and a wood-burning boiler stove. The only other sources of heat are the electric towel radiators in each of the bathrooms. The extension walls and entire roof of the property are constructed from Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) with additional rigid insulation on the internal face. The existing masonry walls were upgraded with cavity wall insulation and 100mm rigid insulation on the outer face. All windows and doors are triple-glazed with Argon filled units. Externally there are lead-clad dormer windows and skylights within a natural slate roof covering. The external walls are clad in vertical cedar boarding which is being allowed to age naturally to achieve a silver finish.

Currie & Brown was selected to provide building surveying, environmental consulting and project monitoring services.

Our knowledge and understanding of current sustainable and energy-efficient technology contributed to the success of the project. We worked closely with the design subcontractors to maximise building performance and minimise environmental impact, ensuring that the project achieved the desired Passivhaus certification while satisfying the design intent.

This project was entered into the Jersey Construction Council Awards 2015 for the JE Sustainability Award and earned a “Highly Commended” certificate.
