Redeveloping Whipps Cross Hospital

The Whipps Cross Hospital Redevelopment programme aims to establish an integrated health, care and wellbeing campus on the site of the existing hospital, providing the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the local regeneration agenda, including the potential for affordable and key worker housing (through the disposal of surplus land). The new development will total circa 85,000m2.

The project is a high priority for Barts Health NHS Trust and the North East London (NEL) Integrated Care System (ICS) and is one of eight ‘Cohort 3’ (‘Pathfinders’) schemes in the Department of Health & Social Care’s New Hospital Programme.

Our role

We have been working with the Trust since 2018, initially to design and establish the Programme Management Office and then to run it, author the Strategic Outline Case and Outline Business Case and provide cost consultancy services. We were also appointed to facilitate the development of an Integrated Delivery Framework across the NEL ICS, working with service providers, commissioners and local authorities to put in place processes for managing the delivery of system-wide service transformation programmes.

Our team has been embedded in the Whipps Cross Redevelopment team, and we have acted across all parts of the programme to support where needed, drawing on Currie & Brown specialists where required, for example, procurement strategy advice and benefits specialists. We bring experience and lessons learnt from other major hospital developments to continuously improve and deliver high-quality service on this high-profile and significant programme.
