Building better healthcare in Peru
In parts of Peru, specialist healthcare has been out of reach, not because hospitals are far away, but because the existing facilities can’t provide the advanced care people need. Until now, regions like Piura and La Libertad had no hospitals at Level III-1, the highest tier in Peru’s public health system. That’s changing.

Helping more people get the care they need
Through a government-to-government (G2G) agreement between the UK and Peru, the National Health Investment Program (PRONIS) of the Peruvian Ministry of Health is leading the delivery of two new hospitals. The UK Healthcare Alliance (UKHA) is supporting this effort. Currie & Brown, alongside Gleeds and AECOM, is helping turn that ambition into reality
What’s being built
By 2028, new and upgraded hospitals will serve communities in:
- Piura Province – a new high-complexity hospital
- Trujillo – a replacement with a new, upgraded regional teaching hospital
These facilities will offer specialized care that doesn’t currently exist in the region. They’ll cut travel time and bring essential services closer to home for millions of Peruvians.
Project timeline and current status
Our work began in October 2024 and is set to run for 47 months. The baseline target is to complete the program by September 2028.
We’re currently in the procurement and design phase. The procurement process began in February, followed by a roadshow event in March. That marked the start of engagement with potential bidders. The process has since moved into the Pre-Qualification Questionnaire (PQQ) stage. We expect to launch the Invitation to Tender (ITT) in the last quarter of the year.
Design is also advancing, and we anticipate having an approved RIBA Stage 2 in the third quarter of the year.

Collaborative work to achieve results
Peru's G2G hospital infrastructure program brought together different ways of working. A key step was to adapt UK best practices to our client's objectives. When opportunities for improvement arose, we sought the best alternatives to act quickly and collaboratively. At the same time, we created a new procurement strategy to keep the work going and maintain quality.
Our design assurance team reviewed the initial plans in detail. They combined their knowledge of UK standards with their understanding of Peruvian regulations. This helped us identify risks early, reduce costs, save time, and avoid last-minute changes.
We also worked closely with our local operations and maintenance experts. They know how Peruvian hospitals work, from equipment maintenance to the flow of patients, staff, and services. Their insights shaped design improvements that will make it easier to operate, maintain, and adapt the hospitals in the future.
At the same time, we led the equipment planning workflow. We turned clinical and functional needs into a clear plan for procurement, installation, and training. By defining requirements early on, we helped the client make decisions with confidence and at the right time.
