The new Romford leisure centre, Sapphire Ice and Leisure, will open on Saturday 3 February with a day packed full of free activities, such as ice skating sessions and exercise sessions. Dancing on Ice champion, Ray Quinn, will be joining the celebrations and showing off his award-winning skills when he takes to the ice to perform.
Currie & Brown provided employer’s agent, cost management and principal designer services for the new Sapphire Ice and Leisure, which forms a major part of Havering Council’s multi-million-pound investment to improve sports and fitness facilities in the borough.
In partnership with Everyone Active, the council is delivering an extensive mix of facilities at the centre, including an eight-lane, 25-metre main pool and learner pool, 100-station fitness suite, group exercise studios and an ice rink with capacity for over a hundred skaters and spectator seating for up to 1,000 people. The project included a land swap to not only provide the council with the appropriate land but to help fund the project.
Councillor Melvin Wallace, cabinet member for culture and community engagement, said: "We are extremely excited for the opening of this long-awaited facility. The health and wellbeing of our residents is a priority for the Council and this facility is great for the future of sport and leisure in Havering."
Annette Tetlaw, associate at Currie & Brown, added: "Currie & Brown has thoroughly enjoyed being involved with the development of this incredible new facility. The project has been very rewarding and I look forward to seeing the new facilities at Sapphire Ice and Leisure in use."
