University of Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory redevelopment plans approved by council

The University of Cambridge’s plans to build a brand new 35,000m² facility, incorporating laboratories with lecture theatres and public spaces, have received approval. The laboratory redevelopment forms part of the university’s West Cambridge Gateway project, including a shared facilities hub, public realm works and supporting infrastructure.

Currie & Brown is providing project management, NEC 3 supervisor and principal designer services for the new laboratory, Cavendish III, which is set to be the largest project undertaken by the University of Cambridge.

Housing the Department of Physics’ research groups, their laboratories, office and support accommodation, along with teaching, library, outreach, exhibition and other functional spaces, Cavendish III will be the signature building at the entrance to the West Cambridge campus.

The project aims to construct a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rated building, using BIM Level II protocols while following an NEC3 contract governance regime.

Stephen Law, director at Currie & Brown, explained: “We are delighted that the plans to build Cavendish III have been approved. This is a significant milestone for the project, and we are looking forward to working on the next stage of the redevelopment. The building is designed to support the prestigious department’s research for the next 50 years, and we are proud to be involved in the construction of the new home for this world-famous institution.”
