New state-of-the-art South Devon College Sports Centre completed

Work has completed on the new South Devon College Sports Centre based adjacent to its Paignton campus, for which Currie & Brown provided cost management services.

The new sports centre development comprises a 3G artificial football pitch, multi-use games area (MUGA) and a sports pavilion comprising changing facilities, WCs, showers, office accommodation, catering facility and community hub room.

The challenging sloping site required an extensive groundworks package to form the development plateau. This involved a complex on-site materials management strategy to optimise reusable materials harvested from the ground through crushing rock to circumvent the cost of exporting waste and importing virgin aggregates.

Currie & Brown worked closely with the college and the design team to cost manage both the main construction and the 3G pitch installation contracts. A sound and methodical contractual basis was developed to allow the two work streams to progress harmoniously on site together, with key milestones for possession of the pitch and MUGA areas agreed upfront and subsequently achieved.

Commenting on the project Paul Chamings, director at Currie & Brown, said: “The new sports centre with its state-of-the-art facilities will benefit the local community as well as students at the college, particularly those studying further education sport and fitness courses, apprenticeships and degree-level programmes at University Centre South Devon. Currie & Brown has thoroughly enjoyed working on the project.”
