Newton Abbot museum open to the public

Currie & Brown provided project management and contract administration on Newton’s Place, a new museum, offices and community space for the residents of Newton Abbot, Devon.

Located in the former St Leonard’s Church in Newton Abbot, the museum opened at the beginning of October, with the community hub due to open later in the year. The restoration of the Grade II-listed church provides a centrally accessible community space, celebrating the heritage of the town and its people. Council staff will also relocate to the newly renovated building.

Funded by a combination of National Lottery Heritage and crowd-sourced finance, construction started on site in 2018, converting the church building to a museum, offices and community spaces. A first floor was installed, and special funding was received to preserve the church’s chancel ceiling and other heritage elements.

Myles Clough, director in Currie & Brown’s Exeter office, commented: “We have been working on this exciting project since 2017, and, despite delays during the construction phase and the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, I’m delighted that this project is now completed and open to the public.”
